This course will take place at the Spokane County Sheriff's Office Training
Center at Spokane Community College, 1810 N. Greene Street, Building #7,
Spokane, WA 99217. Class hours are from 0800 - 1700 each day.
All meals are the student's responsibility. |

This course will certify students as Police Cyclists through the
International Police Mountain Bike Association. This class combines classroom
instruction and on-the-bike practical exercises, which include but are not
limited to: slow-speed cone drills (tested), obstacle clearing (tested),
off-road riding, group riding, bike-oriented patrol procedures and bike
maintenance. Students should expect to be riding their bike for four to five
hours per day, and be able to ride five miles daily without difficulty. This
class is being offered twice (also the week of May 26th - 29th, 2008), please
indicate on the registration form which date you would like to attend.
Equipment Required:
-Mountain bike from reputable manufacturer in good working condition (having
pedal retention devices, two water bottles, hydration delivery system, headlight,
L.E.D. or flashing red tail light, patch kit, tire levers, two spare tubes,
frame mounted tire pump, and rear mount kick stand)
-Safety equipment (eye protection, bicycle helmet, padded cycling gloves,
and optional body armor)
-Appropriate attire (casual bicycling clothing on the first three days, but
uniform required for test on last day)
-Full duty belt (including handgun, magazines, handcuffs, and flashlight)

Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed.
Proper training is essential to an officer's on-the-job performance and safety.
It is also critical in reducing liability. The PC course provides bicycle
officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities.
The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling,
Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle
Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community
Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness
& Nutrition. This demanding class involves over 20 hours of on-bike time
to develop and improve riding skills.

Testing Procedure: written & on-bike
Requirements: Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to
bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members
of a department considering use of the bicycle.
Certification: IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers
who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better
on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for
certification accompanied by the appropriate fee. |
