The participant will learn the basic skills needed to operate the bicycle as a safe and complete law enforcement tool in accordance with International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) standards. The areas of instruction covered in the class include: the bike as tool and mode of transportation, and keeping bike and rider in operation. Upon successful completion of this course, the student is eligible for official IPMBA certification and will be able to use a mountain bike in their patrol duties under all conditions.

Prerequisites:
o Participants should already know how to ride a multi-geared mountain bike. This is not a class for a beginning cyclist.
o Participants should be in excellent physical condition. For example, students should be able to ride 20 miles at a constant 12 mph average speed.
o Participants must be a sworn member of a law enforcement agency and attend all 36 hours of instruction.
o Participants must have insurance coverage with the respective agency at the time of class.
o Participants must furnish a 24 to 27 speed mountain bike that is mechanically sound and capable of at least mid-range performance.
o Participants must have pedal retention devices (clipless/toe clips) installed on their bikes prior to class, front lighting system (at least 5 watts/looms), and a rear tail light.
o Participants must have cycling equipment including eye protection, helmet, gloves, and comfortable clothing.

Description : :

Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed. Proper training is essential to an officer's on-the-job performance and safety. It is also critical in reducing liability. The PC course provides bicycle officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities. The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling, Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness & Nutrition. This demanding class involves over 20 hours of on-bike time to develop and improve riding skills.

Requirements:
Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle.
Certification: IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.
