This class will meet at the University of Illinois PD, 1110 W. Springfield Ave, Urbana, IL, beginning at 0745 on June 23. A night ride will be included on Wednesday, June 25. On-bike portions of the class will be held throughout the UIUC campus as well as the adjoining cities of Champaign and Urbana. Officers must bring their own copy of "Complete Guide to Public Safety Cycling." Uniform, vest (if issued) and duty belt are required during the on-bike portions of the class. Refer to "Required Materials" in the general Police Cyclist description below for additional requirements.

Several national hotel and motel chains are available in the area, many with government rates. A complete list will be sent to students upon registration for the class.

UIUC is located in the cities of Champaign and Urbana, Illinois, at the junction of Interstates 72, 74, and 57. The campus is approximately two hours south of Chicago, two hours west of Indianapolis, and three hours northeast of St. Louis. Enrollment is limited to twenty (20) officers. Registration must be confirmed by May 23.

Description : :

Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed. Proper training is essential to an officer's on-the-job performance and safety. It is also critical in reducing liability. The PC course provides bicycle officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities. The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling, Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness & Nutrition. This demanding class involves over 20 hours of on-bike time to develop and improve riding skills.

Testing Procedure: written & on-bike
Requirements:
Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle.
Certification: IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.
