08:30-09:00 Welcome and Introduction, Course Goals & Objectives, Certification Requirements

09:00-10:00 Bicycle fit, Inspection and Anatomy

10:00-11:15 Bicycle Handling and Effective Cycling

11:15-12:00 Effective Cycling Video

12:00-13:00 Lunch

13:00-13:45 Group Riding (classroom)

13:45-14:15 Warm up and short ride

14:15-15:00 Skill Drills 1, 2 & 3

15:00-15:45 Skill Drills 4 and 5

15:45-17:00 Slow speed riding techniques and Drills 12, 13 & 14 (if desired, add Drills 9 &10)

Day Two

08:00-08:45 Hazards and Common Crashes

08:45-09:30 Legal Issues and Traffic Law

09:30-10:00 Warm-up and short ride

10:00-11:30 Skill Drills 6, 7, 8 & 11

11:30-12:00 Lunch

12:00-12:45 Obstacle Clearance

12:45-14:00 Bike Maintenance

14:00-17:00 Effective Cycling ride with obstacles (off road ride)

Day Three

13:00-14:00 Nutrition and Fitness

14:00-15:00 Patrol Procedures and Arrest Tactics

15:00-17:30 Suspect contacts, takedowns and dismounts

17:30-18:30 Dinner

18:30-19:00 Nighttime Patrol and Conspicuity (classroom)

19:00-20:30 Mock Scenarios

20:30-22:00 Night Riding with obstacles

09:00-10:00 Uniforms and Equipment

10:00-11:30 Effective Cycling Evaluation

11:30-12:30 Lunch

12:30-17:00 Drills, Group Riding, Obstacles (possible evaluations)

Day Five

The classroom will be held at the Southwest Criminal Justice Training Academy (www.svcjta.com) with the on-bike time to include some historical areas throughout Bristol VA and TN to include the Bristol Motor Speedway.

Description : :

Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed. Proper training is essential to an officer's on-the-job performance and safety. It is also critical in reducing liability. The PC course provides bicycle officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities. The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling, Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness & Nutrition. This demanding class involves over 20 hours of on-bike time to develop and improve riding skills.
Course Length: minimum 32 hours

Testing Procedure: written & on-bike
Requirements:
Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle.
Certification: IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.
