This 40 hour course will be based at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal
Justice Academy (Middletown Campus)which is just south of Winchester, VA.
Classroom portions and on bike skills exercises will take place at the Academy
with several off site rides throughout the week. |

The Super 8 Motel in Middletown, VA is just a few blocks away from the
Academy, with special rates offered for the Academy students. Contact the
Academy for assistance with booking your room. Several other hotels are located
in Stephen's City, VA and Strasburg, VA. It is suggested that students travelling
long distances stay locally on Wednesday night due to the night ride which
will not end until at least 11:00 p.m. |

This course is approved for In-Service training credit through the Virginia
Department of Criminal Justice Services (36 career developement / 4 legal
hours). This course is offered at no charge to Academy member agency personnel
- priority registration is given to member agencies. The Academy cost is
$375.00 per person for non member agency personnel. For additional information

Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed.
Proper training is essential to an officer's on-the-job performance and safety.
It is also critical in reducing liability. The PC course provides bicycle
officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities.
The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling,
Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle
Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community
Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness
& Nutrition. This demanding class involves over 20 hours of on-bike time
to develop and improve riding skills.
Course Length: minimum 32 hours

Testing Procedure: written & on-bike
Requirements: Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to
bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members
of a department considering use of the bicycle.
Certification: IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers
who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better
on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for
certification accompanied by the appropriate fee. |
